Figures in clay from the Van Deren and Joan Coke Collection. These ceramic artists infuse the simplest of materials––mud––with creative force. They call forth forms of animals from the natural world as well as recreating creatures from the dream world such as materials (sirenas) and guardian spirits (naguales). Their subjects are drawn from politics, popular culture, religion, family and community and their approaches are often humorous or irreverent. The exhibition, will offer a glimpse into the diversity of figural clay works created in Mexico and celebrate both the identified and unidentified ceramic artists who create timeless beauty out of nothing but earth, air, fire and water.
