unCOMMON GROUND: Worlds Outside This One

June 3?August 27, 2011

Concurrently with Across the Great Divide, 516 ARTS will host a related exhibition in the downstairs gallery organized by guest curator Erin Elder, in which a group of international emerging artists respond to a legacy of homesteading, squatting, hermitage and fort building. Worlds Outside This One addresses the urge for momentary acts of self-determination and as more than simply a showcase of blueprints, shelters, journals and maps, it aims to create a set of spontaneous moments and hand-hewn spaces. Looking to those who create ad hoc communities and make-shift structures through art practice as well as daily life, this exhibition illuminates the productive tension between Do-It-Yourself autonomy and shared notions of Utopia. These two exhibitions reach across the divides of time, culture, geography and the chasm separating mainstream media myth and historical reality, debunking some of the clichés about the counterculture. Price’s work is a photographic memoir of the back to the land movement in the late 1960s and 70s, and the accompanying group exhibition curated by Erin Elder explores what those historical experiments mean to contemporary artists today. Both exhibitions are meditations on creating shelter, seeking space and exploring unlimited possibilities.
