"New Mexicans and the world know our state is a prime contributor to the contemporary sport of hot air ballooning," said Marilee Nason, Curator of Collections at the Balloon Museum. "In this exhibition, we also explore many other interesting and important roles lighter-than-air craft have played in the State of New Mexico -- in tourism, top secret projects, stratospheric research, aerospace medicine, and popular culture."
Some artifacts included in the exhibit are instruments from the Cold War reconnaissance project Moby Dick in which balloons were used to take high altitude photographs over Soviet sites. There will also be an original photo of the Graf Zeppelin flying over Columbus, New Mexico while completing its first round-the-world flight. The role of balloons in remote sensing and astronomical research in New Mexico will also be part of the exhibit.
The new exhibition is included with regular admission.
